Man Made Stones

Man Made Stones are nothing but made in laboratories, not formed by nature. Some man-made stones exist solely as lab created stones while other man-made stones also have natural counterparts.Solely man made stones examples are Cubic zirconia and crystal where as ruby and spinel are both found in nature and created in laboratories.Synthetic ruby and synthetic spinel look virtually identical to natural ruby and natural spinel and have essentially the same chemical composition and structure. While man-made stones do not carry the same sense of history and romance as the natural gemstones. There are many advantages of man made stones like they are more affordable than natural gems and because they are created in a laboratory, their colour will always be uniform.cubic zirconia was once known primarily as a diamond imitation, it is now a stone which is recognised in its own rights for its sparkling appearance and its availability in virtually all colours.

Man Made Stones

Man Made gemstones can be classified in to Lab Created Stones and Imitation Stones.

Lab Created Stones

Lab Created Stones are also known as the Synthetic Stones.Lab Created Stones are created in the laboratory and have similar chemical composition and physical properties of their natural counterparts.Synthetic gemstones have all the visual, chemical and physical properties of their natural counterparts, but they are created in a laboratory Scientists use the same elements and conditions as found in the earth to create a synthetic version of the natural gemstone, but in a much shorter time period.

For example: A Lab Created Ruby does posses similar chemical composition and physical properties of a natural Ruby.
They are the finest stones money can buy. They look better than natural and all stones are fine gem quality. Most of these stones are made of “Lab Spinel” or “Lab Corundum” or “Lab Quartz”. Even experienced gem dealers and professionals are sometimes puzzled to differentiate between the Natural and Lab Created Stone.

For example consider the following Lab created stones with their correct composition:-

  • Lab Created Ruby and Sapphires are made of Lab Corundum, which is also called Flame fusion method.
  • Lab Created Amethyst, Citrine, Ametrine, Emerald, Aquamarine are made by Hydrothermal process.

Through modern technology and equipment, synthetic gemstones often look identical to nature’s authentic gems. With the same cut and polish, generally a quick glance won’t be enough to distinguish if a gemstone is natural or synthetic. Since natural gemstones are created in nature, they will often have minor flaws, imperfections or inclusions that have occurred over time. Synthetic gemstones usually appear flawless, giving them added appeal for those wanting perfection. Stating that these gemstones are ‘fake’ would be too harsh. With similar beauty and chemical makeup, the distinction is more appropriately stated as a difference between natural or synthetic and not real or fake.

Imitation Stones

Imitation gemstones are also referred to as simulated.Imitation Stone are made in the laboratory and looks like a natural stone but do not and have similar chemical composition and physical properties of their natural counterparts. Imitations are made of glass, plastic, ceramic or other materials, but they are created to resemble natural stones. Imitations often do such a fine job mimicking natural gems it can sometimes be difficult to spot the difference without a closer look. One of the most well-known imitations is cubic zirconia, which has been widely used and commercialized alongside diamonds for over three decades.

For example consider the following Some of the imitation stones are also of good quality and also widely accepted in the gem industry:

  • Cubic Zirconia (CZ) has been a popular imitation gem that is used in the gem industry for several decades to simulate a natural diamond. This stones has similar look and sparkle to that of a natural diamond but just cost a fraction to that that of a natural diamond. It boasts eye catching sparkle.
  • Glass Gemstones are another type of imitation Gemstones. Glass gemstone closely resembles genuine stones like Emerald, Peridot, Rubies, Sapphires, Aquamarine, Tourmaline, etc…
