Sand Blasted Surface Textures stones

Stones have different surface textures:

  1. Honed
  2. Polished
  3. Flamed
  4. Tumbled
  5. Sand Blasted
  6. Sawn
  7. Bush Hammered

Rock or stone is a natural substance, a solid aggregate of one or more minerals or mineraloids. For example, granite, a common rock, is a combination of the minerals quartz, feldspar and biotite. The Earth’s outer solid layer, the lithosphere, is made of rock.

Rock has been used by mankind throughout history. The minerals and metals found in rocks have been essential to human civilisation.

Three major groups of rocks are defined: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. The scientific study of rocks is called petrology, which is an essential component of geology.

This surface is the result of a pressurised flow of sand and water that provides a textured surface with a matte gloss.Sand blasting involves projecting a high-pressure airline coarse-grained grit, onto the top surface of the stone. It is characterised by a textured surface with a matte gloss.Depending on the pressure applied to the sand, the stone presents a punctuated and chromatic surface.

Producing a finish similar to cleft, sand blasting involves projecting a high-pressure airline coarse-grained grit, onto the top surface of the stone. It is characterised by a textured surface with a matte gloss.

The stone surface is balsted with silica sand or corundum, which is driven by air through a nozzle, thus “shooting” the sand against the stone

Polished surface texture is a reflection of polished crystals that bring out the brilliant colours and grains of natural stones. The shine on stone surface comes from polishing bricks and powders used during fabrication and not from any coating.

Polishing is achieved with almost zero porosity, emphasising the highest levels of structure, colour and texture. This “closed pore” finish, gives the stone more resistance to attack by external agents, a resistance that can be increased by various protective treatments.

Honed Surface Textures stones

It is produced by grinding a surface with high grit material to a uniform specification, without producing a reflective surface. Honed stone colours are not as vibrant as polished stones. A smooth finish with a slight sheen is produced by using a polishing head. This surface is very smooth, but often very porous.

Rubbing is achieved by a process similar to polishing abrasion, but without the resultant shine. Large production machines are also called polishing trains, and these are equipped with multiple heads that mount different abrasive grain per head and rotate on fixed benches along the process chain.

For small areas, this can be performed manually by means of articulated arm polishers. These achieve flat, smooth surfaces, dull and without any visible mark, provided the tone is darker than other terminal, highlighting the structure, texture and colours of the stone. This process is often applied to polished stones that do not reach the necessary degree of crystallization, often in the case of limestone and sandstone.

We could say that rubbing down is the first step to achieving brightness. This finish is applied in compact rock, with a minimum degree of hardness. As the polishing is achieved by abrasion, and in these cases it is most common to use conventional abrasives such as silicon carbide.

It is a finish that makes the surface of natural stone smooth and matted, without or with limited reflection of light. The same method and abrasive materials are used to achieve this finish as in polished finish, but polishing stops at an earlier stage and the stone is not buffed. The surface has a lighter shade but the overall colour and depth of the stone are preserved. Tiles are smooth but quite porous and should definitely be sealed. For our clients we offer travertine tiles that are honed and filled. In general, this type of finish can be applied to different stones and is preferred for locations with heavy traffic, such as floors, stairs, thresholds. We offer a great variety of honed tiles both for interior and exterior purposes – marble, slate, limestone, travertine, granite.

Honed: Provides a flat to low sheen gloss. Different levels of gloss can be selected. This surface is very smooth, but often very porous. This texture is common in high traffic buildings. Honed floors should always be protected with Stone guard Penetrating Sealer because it has wide-open pores. Honed stone colours are not as vibrant as a polished stone.
